Hey everyone. I know I have been a little off topic lately, so I am going to bring it back a little by reviewing my guitar. The infamous Schecter Damien -6. Ok, not so infamous, but whatever.
I bought this guitar in February if my memory serves me correct for $400. What drew my attention to it is it’s flat black finish. I love that. Then the pearly bat inlays caught my attention and for the price I knew it was going home with me.
It has been my main guitar since then and has served me well. I play very hard and heavy quite a bit, and have never broken a string. It comes with passive EMG pickups (H4/H4A) and they sound ok. Their has been some debate on the internet as to whether they sound good or not, but I think people actually lose site that these are the stock pickups in a $400 dollar guitar. The way they judge it you would think they were the stock pickups in a $2000 guitar. Heck yeah, if I bought a sunburst Gibson Les Paul for over $2k, I would be pissed to find these installed, who wouldn’t? But for the Schecter Damien -6, their just fine. They can be quite loud and only get muddy when their pushed really hard. Maybe one day I will change them, just not right now.
The tuners are great and I find it very rare if the guitar goes out of tune while playing. It comes with a string through design and a Floyd Rose (licensed) is available for a few quid more. I got fed up with the Floyd Rose on my BC Rich Warlock, so I am quite happy with the string through design. The only minor complaint I have about it is when changing the strings it can get hung up in the grommets. No quick string changes on this beast.
My last little hang up is in areas where it starts to wear, the flat finish begins to look a little polished, but it kind of gives it a little personality. You get the feeling this is a working man’s guitar and not a showpiece.
It handles drop tunings with the greatest of ease and sounds great. It is a fast guitar with a little setup and playability is comfortable, although I do recommend a wrist band, because you will rub it along the rather sharp top edge.
All in all, I must say, I am quite happy playing this guitar and having never had the money to afford top of the line guitars, this one is the best I have ever had. A true working man’s guitar at a true working man’s price.
Take care everyone, C-YA!
