This is not a Sonic Youth fansite. I know, I know, I wrote about them the other day, but I just wanted to give you my impressions of their newest album, The Eternal.
Having been a Sonic Youth fan for years and years and years and years, I have owned every thing they ever made. Even some of their more obscure and early work. I was kind of let down by the last major label release I bought, which was , A Thousand Leaves. It had a few good songs but that was it, I felt absolutely nothing for what else was on the album.
Anyway, yesterday I was out and about and decided I would give them another chance and bought The Eternal. I listened to it on the way home and thought to myself, “Hey this isn’t half bad”. I got home, did the million things a usually do, then about midnight I put the CD into my home stereo system, which has really great speakers, and turned off all the lights. Then it was just me and the music. I let it flow right through me and minus one song I didn’t like too much, the album is a gem.
Malibu Gas Station is the track on the disk that in my mind stands out from the rest. It kind of embodies that sound that I always enjoyed from them. Sacred Trickster and No Way are also really good and the album finishes with a song called Massage The History, which is really great.
People, if your Sonic Youth fans, this is a must pick up album. I think being on an indie label really brought something special out. I leave you with some old school sonic youth, Teenage Riot live. C-ya!
