Boss ME-70: A Review

Ok, so I got the ME-70 a couple of weeks ago. I really didn’t mention it here because I wanted to try it out for a little while before saying anything. So far I really like this unit. Here is a list of things I like and dislike.

* It has a metal chassis, I like that, but the actual pedals (minus the whammy/volume) are made of plastic. I hope they last.

*I enjoy the fact it has a built in tuner, only it doesn’t impress me because it gets all sensitive and I never get that feeling I am perfectly in tune. But it gets the job done.

*I like the fact that it has that built in whammy/volume pedal, that will also do +1 octave and -1 octave and also control mod and delay rates. Sadly you can only use one of these functions at a time. Also it just a hair to easy to flip between volume and whammy mode and have accidently lowered my volume mid solo thinking I am in whammy.

*The delays are great! Sadly though if you use the phrase looper, you really cant use the delay pedal in manual mode. I have not tried it in preset mode though it should work.

*I love the fact that it has knobs and not a ton of menus to scroll through like some other multi effects units. It makes it so much simpler to just dial in your tone. I wish it had something to protect the knobs though, like the Line 6 Pod XT Live uses, I can see a knob getting broken in a vicious stomp.

*The preamp selections are great, though I mainly use the clean setting. The Mesa setting sounds really good to me as well. That is saying alot considering that I am using a twin reverb as my amp, not known for holding certain types of overdrives well.

*The reverb sounds good, but I don’t like how it adds it to all your sound. For example, If I record something using the phrase looper, and I recorded it clean (no reverb), then I wanted to play a nice lead on top of the recording with some reverb, the moment I turn the reverb on, all the sound has reverb including the looped phrase.

*The output volume control helps me alot, the Twin Reverb is a LOUD amp even at volume level 2, so I can turn this unit way down and make the sound levels of the amp a bit more controllable for late night jamming, and if worse comes to worse, it does have a headphone out jack.

*Will take six AA batteries, but I already had a 1spot power adapter that works with it, sad that for the price they don’t throw in a free power adapter.

I could go on and on, but this a blog, not a paid review site. Overall I think the unit is really good. It retails at Guitar Center for $299 and I used a 10% discount coupon they sent me so I got it a bit cheaper. Only time will tell if it’s worth the money.
