A Sad Day In Local Music
Posted by Administrator in General, Music on 06 20th, 2009| | 4 Comments »

This morning (June 19) I woke up to learn the sad news that the Georgia Theatre in Athens Ga. had burned down. It was the kind of news that gave me pause. I called my wife over to look at the images on the local news, and since she is not from around here it meant nothing to her, but wow it sure did bring back alot of memories.

The Georgia Theatre had seen many great names that came out of Georgia like R.E.M. and the B-52’s. The list of bands who played their is extensive, B.B. King, Mr. Bungle, The Reverend Horton Heat, Muddy Waters, Drivin N’ Cryin, but for me, honestly, it will always be the place we went to after all the other bars and venues in Athens would close down for the night. It seemed like everybody in town headed there then. No need for a band, just loud music, no need for drinks, because most of us were already wasted.

There we would party further into the night, some of us trying to hook up since we had struck out at the bars or concerts, others coming to just wiggle their ass to the beat one last time before the night ended. Some simply wanting to mingle with the crowds that would come in.

Downtown Athens Georgia is a very special and beautiful place. The campus of the University of Georgia is there and there is everything you could imagine there. Great food, great venues like the 40 Watt, and the Georgia Theater and bars galore. In the daytime, downtown also has a bunch of shops and boutiques that have all kinds of things. The spirit of downtown is alive with the youth that study their and those from surrounding areas who simply want to bask in the ambiance.

The loss of the Georgia Theater is akin to Los Angeles losing The Viper Room, or CBGB burning down in New York. (Didn’t they close?) Sad day for nightlife and local music in Athens Ga. it is.

So I constantly keep my head buried in Craigslist looking for good deals and what have you on music equipment. I can’t help it. It’s an addiction. So yesterday I was going through the music equipment ads when I see the weirdest trade offer.

A guy wanted to trade his 65 Fender Twin Reverb Reissue for a smaller old fender amp. I checked the specs and if the number of tubes in an amp are equivelent to a man’s penis size, then call me Schlong Dong Silver. This sports a total of ten tubes and pushes 85 watts. I read the reviews, and everyone said it’s loud. Sounded like the right amp for me.

So I emailed the guy and offered him my old school Blues Deluxe and my green Ibanez hollow body. (Never really got used to it.) Well whadayaknow? He wrote back and said it sounded like a good deal and to meet up with him to make the deal. I did and it’s finished now.

I will miss the Blues Deluxe, 45 watts was a good bit of power and it had one of the sweetest blues tones I have ever heard. Not to mention that the fact that it was wearing blond tolex which may infact make it a collectors item seeing as how almost all of them produced sport tweed. It was indeed difficult to pull some of the metal sounds out of it with my pedals because it just absolutely was not built for it. Though it can be achieved. ($$)

I got the Twin Reverb home and what they say is true. It has the most undeniable clean tone I have ever heard. It is indeed crazy loud. My crappy pedals seem to like it better as well, since the amp has no pre-flavored blues tones associated with it. Just a blank canvas of clean tone to color with whatever distortion pedal best suits it’s original tone. It was infact so loud that when I was playing it at volume level “8″ it shook the power adapter for my pedal out of the socket on the wall. Hell Yeah!

This is what is on the fender website:

This amp has seen action in every imaginable musical venue and continues its musical legacy today! Whether you play rock, jazz, country, or whatever, this is what a clean electric guitar sounds like! Or add an upside-down Stratocaster® guitar and a fuzz box …

Our 85-watt (at 4 ohms) Vintage Reissue of the ’65 Twin Reverb features four 6L6 Groove Tube™ output tubes, four 12AX7 preamp tubes, two 12AT7 preamp tubes, two 12” 8-ohm Jensen® C-12K speakers, dual channels (normal and vibrato), Fender reverb, vibrato, two-button reverb and vibrato on-off footswitch, tilt-back legs, black textured vinyl covering and silver grille cloth.

See that up there? That’s my newly acquired Fender Blues Deville/ Blues Deluxe amp. What so special about it. Tubes baby, lots of tubes. 5 to be exact.

You know back in the day, the television had tubes, but science brought around better things and soon they were really not in anything. Except guitar amplifiers. Why? Because guitarist realized that tubes actually gave their amps a really sweet tone. Now days owning a tube amp is a luxury not really afforded easily by the regular average working class dude.

But why is this beat up things so freaking special too me? Because this is not a reissue. This is an original.

Check out what ZZ sounds says about the reissue and realize that I have the original 1993 (it may be a 95, working on some leads). Check this out:

In 1993, Fender released the ‘Tweed’ series amps to great success and acclaim. The concept: what if a great old collectable 1950s Deluxe or Bassman was customized with channel switching and Reverb The Blues Deluxe and Blues DeVille were launched as vintage-styled tube amps with ’boutique’ tone at mass-produced prices, and many pro players in the rock, country, and blues fields used them with great results. After a few years, the Blues Deluxe and Blues DeVille were reborn as the Hot Rod Deluxe and Hot Rod DeVille, when they received modified circuitry, a third -More Drive channel, and Black/Silver cosmetic treatment. Though the Hot Rod series amps are more popular than ever today, increasing numbers of enthusiasts continue to request the warm tone, unique circuitry, features and look of the original versions. These ‘Reissue’ models will be offered in addition to the Hot Rods. The Blues Deluxe Reissue produces 40 watts into a single 12″ Special Design speaker by Eminence.
Technical Info
* 3 12AX7 preamp tubes and 2 6L6 output tubes

Aww, hell, it’s on now. I plugged it up and it sounds great. the dude I got it from even looked like it pained him to get rid of it, but I had something he needed and he had something I wanted so the deal was done.

The tolex has cigarette burns on it and I may end up changing it, after all, you can buy the EXACT same tolex fender used to make this with at 26 dollars a yard, lol. What do you think, would it be worth more looking mint, or looking rode hard and put up wet?

Sonic Youth - The Eternal - Review
Posted by Administrator in Music on 06 12th, 2009| | 1 Comment »

This is not a Sonic Youth fansite. I know, I know, I wrote about them the other day, but I just wanted to give you my impressions of their newest album, The Eternal.

Having been a Sonic Youth fan for years and years and years and years, I have owned every thing they ever made. Even some of their more obscure and early work. I was kind of let down by the last major label release I bought, which was , A Thousand Leaves. It had a few good songs but that was it, I felt absolutely nothing for what else was on the album.

Anyway, yesterday I was out and about and decided I would give them another chance and bought The Eternal. I listened to it on the way home and thought to myself, “Hey this isn’t half bad”. I got home, did the million things a usually do, then about midnight I put the CD into my home stereo system, which has really great speakers, and turned off all the lights. Then it was just me and the music. I let it flow right through me and minus one song I didn’t like too much, the album is a gem.

Malibu Gas Station is the track on the disk that in my mind stands out from the rest. It kind of embodies that sound that I always enjoyed from them. Sacred Trickster and No Way are also really good and the album finishes with a song called Massage The History, which is really great.

People, if your Sonic Youth fans, this is a must pick up album. I think being on an indie label really brought something special out. I leave you with some old school sonic youth, Teenage Riot live. C-ya!

More Memory Lane?

**The music in this post may vary in volume, turn your speakers down first, then listen.

Yeah, so who here remembers New Dilemma last year? Too bad it wasn’t snapped by the Wayback Machine. I think I had more music in my sidebar than I had actual content.

Do you guys remember when I did some rap? LOL. Yeah I still laugh too. What you don’t remember? You was not here? Ok. We’ll do an encore. The first one is just rap, it was just one verse, I would say about twenty seconds too long. The second one, is one of those weird crossovers. I still had drums so I laid it down on the drums, then guitar, then rapped on top of it. Crazy me, check it out.

Then there was the song about me getting shot with a gun and my journey to the hospital. Yeah, I don’t even know what I was thinking, a sang it regular pitch first, then I went back it sang it high pitched. Really weird. My sister still makes fun of me for that song. Check it out.

This next one didn’t make it on to the site, but it is an old recording of mine that I don’t think I put because I was tweaking some pitch correction software and screwed the pitch of the chorus up, but now I use it to make me smile. It’s just that bad. Check it out.
